1424 W Ohio St, Chicago IL
For sale: $2.675 million

?I love thinking about the people who built this and what they would think of it now,? said homeowner and restaurateur Jerry Kleiner.

When Kleiner bought his Chicago home it was a brick garage. Built in 1923, the industrial building was a shell awaiting his vision.

?I enjoy taking a property and making it totally special,? Kleiner explained. ?To me, it was taking the foundation of that industrial garage, the integrity of it and ? using it as an open canvas to create a villa in the city.?

Sitting on three city lots, there?s little that hasn?t been changed about the West Town property.

Everything is detailed from the hand-painted murals covering the walls, custom molding and millwork down to the nickel-plated hardware.

And it was hand-done, says Kleiner.

Measuring 9,400 square feet, the colorful home has 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms, all with 15- to 35-foot-high ceilings. Of course, the restaurateur?s home includes a 1,000-square-foot kitchen with restaurant-grade Traulsen appliances.

The world-class kitchen has attracted world-class chefs, among them Jamie Oliver, who came in to cook and develop products.

Beyond the kitchen, the home features a private yard with putting green and custom limestone grotto.

The home is listed by real estate agent Joseph Gasbarra of Coldwell Banker.

According to Zillow?s mortgage calculator, a monthly payment on the home would be $9,319, assuming a 20 percent down payment on a 30-year mortgage.
