Hudson McCann

Atlanta has exercised its options on catcher Brian McCann, right-hander Tim Hudson, and left-hander Paul Maholm, bringing all three players back for 2013 at a combined cost of $27.5 million. McCann faded badly in the second half and was benched in the Wild Card playoff game, but it would have been tough for the Braves?

Nokia Lumia 920 ships first to Rogers, makes Canadians the world's vanguards for $100

Nokia Lumia 920 Rogers

What, did you think Americans or Europeans would get the first crack at the Lumia 920? Continuing a recent pattern of Canadians getting devices first, Rogers has confirmed that some of its stores will have Nokia's flagship Windows Phone 8 hardware in stock on October 30th -- that's almost immediately, folks. If you call and find you're near one of the choice few shops carrying the 920, it will cost you either $100 Canadian on a lengthy 3-year contract or $550 outright to walk away with Microsoft's poster child. Nearly the only drawbacks to being a pioneer are the black-only color choice (sorry, still no patriotic red) and Rogers' current lock on the initial launch, although Microsoft's own mention of the Lumia coming to Rogers "and others" gives us hope that Bell and Telus will follow soon. It's a small price to pay for making even the Finns slightly jealous.

Animals learn to fine-tune their sniffs

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? Animals use their noses to focus their sense of smell, much the same way that humans focus their eyes, new research at the University of Chicago shows.

A research team studying rats found that animals adjust their sense of smell through sniffing techniques that bring scents to receptors in different parts of the nose. The sniffing patterns changed according to what kind of substance the rats were attempting to detect.

The sense of smell is particularly important for many animals, as they need it to detect predators and to search out food. "Dogs, for instance, are quite dependent on their sense of smell," said study author Leslie Kay, associate professor of psychology and director of the Institute for Mind & Biology at the University of Chicago. "But there are many chemicals in the smells they detect, so detecting the one that might be from a predator or an explosive, for instance, is a complex process."

Kay was joined in writing the paper by Daniel Rojas-L?bano, a postdoctoral scholar at the University of Chile in Santiago, who received his PhD from UChicago in 2011. Rojas-L?bano, who did the work as a doctoral scholar, was the first author on the publication. Their results are published in an article, "Interplay Between Sniffing and Odorant Properties in the Rat," in the current issue of the Journal of Neuroscience.

Scholars have hypothesized that animals may be able to focus sniffing, just as humans focus their sight to detect a target, like the face of a friend, in a crowd. Humans are also known to be able to adjust their ability to detect specific odors with practice when cooking or sampling wine, for instance.

Kay and Rojas-Libano drew from two ideas proposed by other scholars to test whether animals can focus their sniffs.

In one set of findings, researchers had shown that the nose can act like a gas chromatograph (a device that separates chemicals in complex blends like flower scents), absorbing substances for different times depending on how readily they interact with the water-based mucus on the sensory receptors in the nose. Odorants that have high "sorption values" are easily absorbed into the mucus, while odors that do not absorb easily into water have lower sorption values.

The other finding crucial to the current work was the discovery that changes in the airflow rates of scents entering the nose can change which odors the nose readily detects. Different parts of the nose have different airflows, and classes of receptors suited to detecting specific odors. Researchers had speculated that animals might be able to change airflow to target specific odors in a blend of chemicals, like focusing on smelling a particular scent in a perfume.

But until the publication of the paper by Kay and Rojas-L?bano, no one had been able to test the ideas that arose from those earlier findings.

"Daniel devised an excellent experiment to test these hypotheses," Kay explained. Rojas-L?bano trained rats to detect a specific odor by rewarding them with a sugar pellet when they had detected a target odor and responded correctly. Electrodes attached to the rats' diaphragm muscles measured the rate at which they were taking in air. He then tested the animals with many mixtures of two chemicals to see if they could pick out those containing the target scent.

The rats were successful in making the distinctions, regardless of which type of odor they were seeking. But the rats learned to look for a highly absorbent odor much more quickly than the rats learning to detect a less absorbent odor. The rats also inhaled differently, depending on which type of odor they were detecting. The animals inhaled for a longer time when they were learning to detect the low-absorbing odor, and then reduced flow rates once they had learned to detect the odor, researchers determined.

"What was happening was that the air was moving through the nose at a slower rate and targeting those parts of the nasal epithelium that are further along in the pathway -- those more likely to pick up the low-absorbent odors," Kay said.

For highly absorbent odors, the animals inhaled more quickly because the parts of the nasal cavity that are sensitive to those smells are closer to the start of the nose's air pathway.

"I think one of the most interesting aspects of these experiments is the finding of the difference in difficulty the rats displayed to detect different targets from the same set of mixtures," Rojas-L?bano said. "This shows that there is more to olfaction than just receptor types and combinations. If detection was solely based on chemical-receptor interactions (as people seem to assume quite often), performance levels should have been more similar between the groups of rats. The physical properties of the odors matter a lot, and so does the type of sniff that an individual uses to smell the odors."

The project was supported with a grant from the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders.

Democratic PAC buys $180K in anti-DesJarlais ads

(AP) ? A national political action committee on Monday launched $180,000 worth of television ads against Republican Rep. Scott DesJarlais, who is anti-abortion, for reports that he once urged a mistress to terminate a pregnancy.

"The bottom line is this: Scott DesJarlais shouldn't be in Congress," Alixandria Lapp, executive director of House Majority PAC, said in a statement to The Associated Press.

The House Majority PAC's ads begin running Monday in the Nashville and Chattanooga markets which reach population centers on both ends of the 4th Congressional District. The group associated with Democratic congressional leaders had previously spent $100,000 on ads in the race.

DesJarlais' campaign platform includes his opposition to abortion rights. He has argued he was using strong language to try to pressure the woman, who was a his patient, to admit she was not pregnant.

Democrat Eric Stewart raised twice as much as DesJarlais in the most recent reporting period. While the incumbent still held a 3-to-1 advantage in cash on hand, the House Majority PAC's ad buy has nearly wiped out that difference.

DesJarlais' polling has confirmed the negative ads appear to have solidified the Democratic base in the district, but the campaign claims they have had little effect on Republicans and independents.

The conversation between DesJarlais and the woman who had also been under his care as a Jasper physician took place while he was trying to reconcile with his first wife, Susan. The divorce was finalized in 2001.

"You told me you'd have an abortion, and now we're getting too far along without one," DesJarlais told the woman who is not identified in the transcript. "If we need to go to Atlanta, or whatever, to get this solved and get it over with so we can get on with our lives, then let's do it."

The DesJarlais campaign has dismissed the details as "old news" that emerged in the last election cycle. But while the 2010 campaign did feature allegations raised during his divorce that he intimidated his ex-wife with a gun ? and in one instance put a gun in his mouth for three hours ? the abortion element was not public knowledge until this month.

Egypt Acknowledges Sexual Harassment Spike Over Holiday

CAIRO -- Egypt's president acknowledged the widespread problem of sexual harassment his country Tuesday, ordering his interior minister to investigate a rash of assaults during a just-completed Muslim holiday.

Mohammed Morsi acted after his government reported 735 police complaints about sexual harassment over the four-day Eid al-Adha holiday, which ended Monday.

Morsi stressed the need to fight "all phenomena of moral chaos and abuses, especially harassment in Egyptian streets," spokesman Yasser Ali said in a statement.

The holiday features celebrations, crowded public squares ? and widespread harassment of women by men.

Rights activists have faulted Morsi's Islamist government for failing to take action against the wave of sexual assaults. His order Tuesday appeared to be an attempt to counter that charge.

Complaints about the problem, which has long been a feature of Egypt's society, gained prominence during last year's popular uprising that unseated longtime President Hosni Mubarak. Women activists and reporters told of severe assaults by men in Tahrir Square, the focus of the mass protests.

Activists say little, if anything, has changed.

A prominent activist, Azza Suleiman, told the state-owned Al-Ahram newspaper Tuesday that her two sons were assaulted in downtown Cairo during the holiday while trying to protect a group of foreigners, while police stood by watching the incident. She criticized the police and the Interior Ministry for failing to secure the crowded streets.

Last week, Egyptian Prime Minister Hisham Qandil condemned sexual harassment in remarks on his Facebook page, calling it a "catastrophe" that threatens society. Qandil said the Cabinet was preparing a law to impose harsher penalties for sexual harassment. Rights activists have been campaigning for such legislation for years.

Dr. Hani Henry, a psychology professor at the American University in Cairo, said that the widespread notion that women should dress more conservatively in order to reduce sexual harassment on Egypt's streets is one of the biggest impediments to addressing the issue.

"There's a `blaming the victim' mentality," Hany said. He predicted that addressing sexual harassment in Egypt's could be more difficult now that Islamists have emerged as the strongest political power in post-revolutionary Egypt.

I am well in control of my feelings and loving the way my life is now.

BEFORE? I had fears that were unwarranted. This was a real setback in life, holding me back from opportunities in life. The confidence level just was down for me. AFTER? I am in well control of my life now with no unwarranted fears. I look at life from a positive angle now.

"Your Phobia Treatment Program is a remarkable find. What I have achieved in these days is thousand times more than what I have gained with the ongoing appointments with psychologists. There are no more fears whatsoever. I feel a lot more confident and in total control of my life like never before."

BEFORE? Social phobia kept me from enjoying life and always kept me away from interacting with others easily. I was afraid to interact with my colleagues and that hampered my career. AFTER? I now have a better work life. I am now very much normal on my workplace, sharing a great rapport with my colleagues here.

"I have tried this program and it was great. It is highly recommended. Social phobia is the worst thing to face, no one knows better than me. I feared my workplace like anything but now I have managed my way out, all because of Jan?s Phobia Treatment Program."

BEFORE? Being a financial advisor, I had to handle lots of stress and work pressure. This left me with no peace. It was a pressure that I was not being able to handle anymore. I always feared facing criticism from others. AFTER? My life has become much more easy-going and cool than it was before. Now, I have a happier life where I can handle professional matters better.

Fear of criticism has made an exit from my life, thanks to your amazing effective treatment system."

BEFORE? I had to climb stairs instead of taking the lift, which everyone would opt for. My doctor said I was claustrophobic. What was wrong with me is I tried and avoided all the suffocating environments. AFTER? The Phobia Release Program changed my lifestyle. Today I am no longer claustrophobic. Suffocating milieus? 8 Simple Tips to Drive Traffic to Your Blog

Blogging Tips

Do you find it hard to drive traffic to your blog? Are you already getting traffic but you?re tired of the results you?re getting?

If your answer is ?yes?, the tips I?ll be sharing soon with you are going to help you overcome your challenges?

Don?t waste your time hiring SEO experts, to help build your blog (My sincere opinion).

They?ll probably try their best and help you hire some SEO content writers to help raise your blog in the search engines. I?m not trying to say this isn?t good but it takes a lot of time and a ton of your investment.

Why wasting your time on something that will take months or even a year to achieve instead of doing something simple but yet effective.

Know this.

The internet has changed? the search engine is getting wiser? they?re beginning to behave like humans. They feel, touch, and even kiss. Lol! Honestly, don?t expect to write a keyword stuffed article and expect to get a raise from the search engines. Forget it. It just won?t work!

Time has gone when people write keyword stuffed articles to promote their websites. Google now only recognizes blogs that churn out quality content at all times.

I?ll be sharing with you some tips I believe you know about?these tips are effective and I assure you that if you apply them, Google will bow before you.

The truth is that though these tips work, but you?ll also need a bit of hard work to make it happen. Time has gone when you just sit down in your balcony?turn on an SEO switch the search engines rewards you.

It won?t work this time. And if you?re already doing it, please stop because you?ll be making Google?s Police agent to come after you ( Google Panda).

Do you understand what I just said, are you flowing with me? Ok, Let?s move on. It seems we are on the right track.

Tip 1: Don?t neglect quality? It?s Google most important ranking factor. If you want Google to reward you with a huge online traffic and get you thousands of subscribers, ensure you publish quality content.

Craft out amazing content that will not only make the search engines give you a good spot, but will also amaze people that you?re not charging money for it.

Tip 2: Write case studies. Take your time to write and research?this is the only way to show people that you know what you know what you?re doing and that you?re a professional who knows the craft better.

Put in your personality. Let people feel your voice. Use your words to paint who you are, where you come from and the things you can do. I?ve found out that people love reading conversational articles and at the same time simple to read.

Just a tip: Space your words- At most, 4 to 5 paragraphs is okay!

Tip 3: Start distributing your articles.
What most Affiliate marketers and in fact online entrepreneur do is to hire an Ezine writer who will churn out tons of content and then distribute to article directories and then you wait for that big payday wondering when those millions will start rolling in

If you do this or you?re already doing it, please stop. It will kill your business and in fact, it?s a complete waste of time.

Article syndication is the key you?ve been waiting for to drive massive online traffic to your blog. Why churn out 15 to 20 articles to distribute in article directories instead of spending out time to craft out one exceptional piece of article and then syndicate for online traffic?

I know you?re getting confused, are you? If you are, don?t be. I?ll be explaining step by step what I mean and I?ll be giving you life examples to help you understand better.

Now?you may ask, How can I syndicate my article? Simple and straightforward.

Tip 4: One of the best and In fact the first syndication process is to publish a quality article on Ezine.com ( only, my opinion).

Tip 5: Take out time to craft out exceptional and clickable headline that will make readers have a?A-ha? moment.

Tip 6: While doing this, post the content on your blog and then share with your networks. Share it with your friends on Twitter and Facebook. If content is business oriented, you can also post on Linkedln.

Tip 7: Join blogging communities, forums, and top social networks to increase your chances of getting traffic to your articles.

? Develop a close relationship with top bloggers in your niche.
? Craft out and send a quality guest post like I?m doing here to top blogs in your niche.
? Keep writing and sending your articles as guest posts. Guest blogging is a way of building quality backlinks to your blog pages?

Tip 8: Try using Facebook and Twitter ads?

Huh!
Sorry for the long drawn out post. But I believe you are learning something from what I just shared with you. All I want from you is to start putting them to work today.

The best way to skyrocket your traffic is to take action. No one is going to build your business- you?re responsible for your blog?s failure or success; therefore, encourage yourself and put on your garment of hard work today!

Monica?s Famous Baked Macaroni and Cheese

Serves:?6-9

Ingredients

* 1 box pasta of your choice that is tubular and has ridges (holds sauce better)

* 4 tablespoons butter

* 3 tablespoons flour

* 1 tablespoon ground mustard

* 1 teaspoon paprika

* 2 tablespoons minced onion

* 2 cups half and half

* 2 large eggs

* 8 ounces shredded sharp cheddar cheese (reserve 3 ounces for topping)

* 8 ounces shredded Italian blend cheese (reserve 3 ounces for topping)

* 6 ounces havarti cheese

* ?seasoning salt

* fresh cracked black pepper

Topping:

* 2 tablespoons butter

* 1 1/2 cups panko bread crumbs

Directions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

In a large pot of boiling, seasoned water (season your water for pasta always with Extra Virgin Olive Oil, garlic powder, onion powder, and seasoning salt), cook the pasta til still slightly firm.

While the pasta is cooking, chop onion. In a separate pot, melt the butter. Whisk in the flour and seasonings over medium high heat and keep it moving for about five minutes, making sure it is free of lumps - this removes the raw flour flavor. Slowly stir in the half and half. Simmer for 5 minutes. Remove from heat.

Next, temper in the eggs. Stir in cheeses (reserve 2 ounces each of cheddar and Italian blend for topping). Season with salt and pepper to taste. Fold the pasta into the mix and pour into a 13x9x2 casserole dish. Top with remaining cheese.

Panko Topping:

Melt the butter and stir in the panko bread crumbs to coat. Sprinkle the macaroni with the bread crumbs. Bake for 15-20 minutes - just until the top is golden brown and the cheeses have melted -- overbaking may cause eggy texture. Remove from oven and rest for five minutes before serving.

NOTE: I usually double this recipe and put it in a lasagna dish (deep dish casserole) -- it is 9x13x3 and holds it fine. This feeds a crowd or you can make 2 13x9x2 dishes and give one away! When giving away, I leave the final bake for the recipient.

Shas? solution to the party?s leadership crisis, the forum of three, has earned an envious spot in the weekly chareidi newspapers and magazines in Eretz Yisrael. Shas? own Yom L?Yom does not play modest, allocating significant real estate to tell the story and share the success, including the array of rabbonim whose photo appears alongside their bracha on the success achieved by Maran HaGaon HaRav Ovadia Yosef Shlita. The paper actually explains in depth that the credit for saving the party goes to Maran?s youngest son, HaGaon HaRav Moshe Yosef, who heads the gadol hador?s Badatz Beit Yosef.

Rav Moshe?s efforts paid off big time in this case, at least for the time being, and the rabbonim who appear in the party-affiliated newspaper are not just Sephardim but prominent Ashkenazim including the Sanzer Rebbe Shlita, the Vishnitzer Rebbe Shlita and Chief Ashkenazi Rabbi Yonah Yechiel Metzger.

The Shas success begs the question if the Ashkenazim can achieve the same success, but with growing splits in the litvish and chassidic factions, such a reality appears unlikely at the present time.

Scientists deepen genetic understanding of MS

Saturday, October 27, 2012

Five scientists, including two from Simon Fraser University, have discovered that 30 per cent of our likelihood of developing Multiple Sclerosis (MS) can be explained by 475,806 genetic variants in our genome. Genome-wide Association Studies (GWAS) commonly screen these variants, looking for genetic links to diseases.

Corey Watson, a recent SFU doctoral graduate in biology, his thesis supervisor SFU biologist Felix Breden and three scientists in the United Kingdom have just had their findings published online in Scientific Reports. It's a sub-publication of the journal Nature.

An inflammatory disease of the central nervous system, MS is the most common neurological disorder among young adults. Canada has one of the highest MS rates in the world.

Watson and his colleagues recently helped quantify MS genetic susceptibility by taking a closer look at GWAS-identified variants in the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) region in 1,854 MS patients. The region has long been associated with MS susceptibility.

The MS patients' variants were compared to those of 5,164 controls, people without MS.

They noted that eight percent of our 30-per-cent genetic susceptibility to MS is linked to small DNA variations on chromosome 6, which have also long been associated with MS susceptibility.

The MHC encodes proteins that facilitate communication between certain cells in the immune system. Outside of the MHC, a good majority of genetic susceptibility can't be nailed down because current studies don't allow for all variants in our genome to be captured.

"Much of the liability is unaccounted for because current research methods don't enable us to fully interrogate our genome in the context of risk for MS or other diseases," says Watson.

The researchers believe that one place to look for additional genetic causes of MS may be in genes that have variants that are rare in the population. "The importance of rare gene variants in MS has been illustrated in two recent studies," notes Watson, now a postdoctoral researcher at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York.

"But these variants, too, are generally poorly represented by genetic markers captured in GWAS, like the one our study was based on."

Simon Fraser University is Canada's top-ranked comprehensive university and one of the top 50 universities in the world under 50 years old. With campuses in Vancouver,

Burnaby and Surrey, B.C., SFU engages actively with the community in its research and teaching, delivers almost 150 programs to more than 30,000 students, and has more than 120,000 alumni in 130 countries.

Rights group: Muslim area of Myanmar city destroyed

Soe Zeya Tun / Reuters

Hla Hla Myint, who suffered a gunshot wound to the head in recent violence, rests in a bed at a hospital in Kyuktaw township, Myanmar, Thursday.

By Reuters

SITTWE, Myanmar - A human rights group expressed concern for the safety of thousands of Muslims on Saturday after revealing satellite images of a once-thriving coastal community reduced to ashes during a week of violence in western Myanmar.

The images released by the New York-based Human Rights Watch show "near total destruction" of a predominantly Rohingya Muslim part of Kyaukpyu, one of several areas in Rakhine state where battles between Rohingyas and ethnic Rakhine Buddhists threaten to derail the former Burma's fragile democratic transition.

More than 811 buildings and houseboats were razed in Kyaukpyu on Oct. 24, forcing many Rohingya to flee north by sea toward the state capital Sittwe, Human Rights Watch said.

"Burma's [Myanmar?s] government urgently needs to provide security for the Rohingya in Arakan (Rakhine) State, who are under vicious attack," Phil Robertson, the group's deputy Asia director, said.

There were widespread unconfirmed reports of boatloads of Rohingyas trying to cross the sea border to neighboring Bangladesh, which has denied them refugee status since 1992.

No food, no water
Rohingyas in dozens of packed boats with no food or water that have fled Kyaukpyu -- an industrial zone important to China -- and other recent hotspots were seeking access on Friday to overcrowded refugee camps around the state capital Sittwe, according to four Rohingya refugee sources.

Some boats were blocked by security forces from reaching the shore and few Rohingyas managed to reach the camps, the sources said by telephone.

A crew from Britain's Channel 4 News gains access to resettlement camps set-up for around 60,000 members of the Muslim minority group months after deadly clashes with local Buddhists forced them from their homes.

Wan-lark foundation, an organization that has been assisting Rakhine Buddhist refugees, said no clashes in the state had been reported to them since Friday night, but dead bodies of Rakhines had been found.

"Around 6pm last night in Kyawtyaw, the bodies of 16 Rakhines were found in the sea. They had died during the attacks on Thursday. We're looking for more bodies," representative Tun Mein Thein said on Saturday.

The chaos suggests the reformist government is struggling to contain historic ethnic and religious tensions suppressed during nearly a half century of military rule that ended last year.

Myanmar government ends direct media censorship

A Rakhine government spokesman put the death toll at 112 as of Friday. But within hours state media revised it to 67 killed from Oct. 21 to 25, with 95 wounded and nearly 3,000 houses destroyed.

The death toll could be far higher, said Human Rights Watch, citing "allegations from witnesses fleeing scenes of carnage and the government's well-documented history of underestimating figures that might lead to criticism of the state."

The clashes come just five months after communal unrest killed more than 80 people and displaced at least 75,000 in the same region.

'Ethnic cleansing'
A boat carrying 120 Muslims from Kyaukpyu was intercepted by Rakhines, who killed the men and raped the women, the advocacy group Burmese Rohingya Organisation U.K. claimed in a statement. This report could not be verified, Reuters said.

"Ethnic cleansing is happening under the noses of the international community and they are doing nothing," said Tun Khin, the group's president. "We have confirmed reports that hundreds of people have been killed and the government must be aware of that."

Ease sanctions on Myanmar, Democracy leader Suu Kyi says on US tour

Kyaukpyu is crucial to China's most strategic investment in Myanmar: Twin pipelines that will carry oil and natural gas through the town on the Bay of Bengal to China's energy-hungry western provinces.

The United Nations has warned that Myanmar's fledgling democracy could be "irreparably damaged" by the violence.

Rohingyas are officially stateless. Buddhist-majority Myanmar's government regards the estimated 800,000 Rohingyas in the country as illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, and not as one of the country's 135 official ethnic groups, and denies them citizenship.

But many of those expelled from Kyaukpyu are not Rohingya but Muslims from the officially recognized Kaman minority, said Chris Lewa, director of the Rohingya advocacy group, Arakan Project. "It's not just anti-Rohingya violence anymore, it's anti-Muslim," she said.

It was unclear what set off the latest arson and killing that started on Sunday. In June, tension flared after the rape and murder of a Buddhist woman that was blamed on Muslims, but there was no obvious spark this time.

Rights groups such as Amnesty International have called on Myanmar to amend or repeal a 1982 citizenship law to end the Rohingyas' stateless condition.

The Yeshiva World Rabbi Eliezer Melamed ... - Yeshiva World News

Rabbi Eliezer Melamed of Yishuv Har Bracha, a prominent rabbinical voice in the dati leumi torani community is using his weekly column in the B?Sheva newspaper to call on persons eligible to vote in the United States presidential election to cast a vote for Governor Mitt Romney. He uses his column to detail the disappointment with President Barak Obama.

?There were tears in my eyes when I saw a picture of African Americans standing up with dignity at the avenue leading to the White House, their gaze as President Barack Obama entered the Oval Office. There was hope that a man like him would understand the Jewish People, that gave the world the message of freedom and moral foundations, and agree that after two thousand years of exile and suffering, it would be fitting for him to assist the Jewish people to return home, but unfortunately he turned out to be one of the most hostile presidents to Israel since the nation was established.

?Instead of helping building land by Israel, to the glory of the world, Obama began to apply pressure to freeze construction in Yehuda, Shomron an Yerushalayim, and two years ago, when the moratorium ended, instead of recognizing the sizeable sacrifice made by Israel and demand Arabs concession, Obama and ministers and advisers demanded a continued building freeze by Israel in those same areas, thereby bringing a curse upon their country and their people. And so it happened, American interests in the Middle East and around the world were hit.?

The rav calls to American Jews to make the correct decision, to vote for Romney. ?Any American citizen who believes in God and his prophets should choose Mitt Romney for president as well as electing a Senate and Congress friendly to, those who believe the whole land of Israel belongs to the Jewish people as he promised to Avraham, Yitzchak and Yaakov, whether such a person is Republican or Democratic.?

The rabbi continues by citing ?the mistake of the Democratic Party? was the American intervention in the name of democracy, leading ultimately to the rise of militant Islam which endangers the entire world as well as affecting the welfare of the citizens under its control.?

He concludes sating ?A great responsibility rests with every citizen of the superpower ? USA. As we learned in Tanach, the relationship to the Jews is a key measure of moral stance of the nations and their leaders.?

He calls on American officials to support the Jewish People and the claim to its land and to ?reject the baseless Arab claim, seeking to steal the land away and return it to its barren state?. He calls for supporting Israel, a move that will ?lead to economic prosperity for all its citizens?.

Keeping Your Feet Happy | Fitness Town Health and Fitness Blog

We all know how to keep our biceps in shape, but few of us know how to keep our toes in good condition. They take significant abuse from the hours we spend on our feet each day, especially in high-heel shoes.

The foot contains three main sections or functional units: the rear foot, mid foot, and fore foot. These three units work together to allow the foot to be flexible (such as accommodating an uneven surface) or to be fairly rigid (such as keeping the body upright as we go through the normal walking cycle).

Each foot contains 26 bones: 7 tarsals (ankle bones), 5 metatarsals (instep bones), and 14 phalanges (toe bones). The main arch of the foot is called the plantar arch. It runs lengthwise and touches the ground only at the heel bone and at the ball of the foot. The plantar arch is thickly padded at both ends. There is also a thick pad of fat under the heel of the foot to absorb shock. In addition to the plantar arch, the foot has two other arches: the metatarsal arch, which runs crosswise under the instep, and the lateral arch, which runs lengthwise along the outside of the foot.

The bones and joints of the foot and ankle are held together by a strong network of muscles and ligaments. The foot is connected to the ankle where one of the tarsal bones, called the talus ,meets the lower leg bones, called the tibia and the fibula.

The ankle joint is called upon to provide both great stability (keeping us standing up) and great mobility (walking, running, jumping). These two functions need to be kept in balance if we?re to keep our feet healthy and functioning.

COLUMN: Adler ? Doctors should drop the sugar tax idea ? Lilley's ...

by Charles Adler

Ontario doctors have launched an attack this week. And no, it?s not about health-care reform. Not about wait lists or rationing services. Not about death boards or meddling bureaucracy.

This week, the Ontario Medical Association declared a ?war on obesity.? And who are the enemies in this war? Well, the people of Ontario, and their freedom to decide what they eat.

How are they fighting this war? Well, they have a new ad campaign, featuring graphic warnings to be placed on food items that doctors don?t like. Just as cigarette packages now feature disturbing images and warning logos to deter people from making bad choices, Ontario doctors want warnings on high-calorie, low-nutritional value foods in an attempt to fight obesity.

And they?re not stopping there. They are lobbying the government for higher taxes on ?bad? foods and lower taxes on ?good? food. They?re calling for restricted sales of junk food and sugary drinks.

Doctors are waging this campaign because they are experts and want people to live healthier lives. Doesn?t sound so bad, right?

The problem is their self-righteous scheme takes away individual choice and freedom. What we eat is the most basic of freedoms. And this campaign aims right at the heart of this basic right.

People have choices and must make decisions. Sometimes these decisions are tough. Sometimes people make bad choices. Choices that are not optimal, for themselves or the public good. But they must live with the consequences of their actions. Taking away this freedom to choose makes us a little more complacent, a little more docile and a little less free.

I?m sure the doctors don?t see it this way. They look at the costs. The OMA estimates that extra health-care costs attributed to obesity cost taxpayers up to $2.5 billion a year in Ontario.

That?s the basic problem with having government-owned health care. Since we all pay into the system, we all pay for the bad choices of others. That?s the problem with socialism. The government takes care of our health and our wellness, they own a piece of us and can make these kinds of authoritarian decisions. Decisions about what we can and cannot do with our own bodies.

On a practical level, this initiative falls flat. The Canadian Taxpayers Federation points out that there were no peer-review papers and no real-world examples where food taxes have changed behaviour. In fact, they point to a D.C. think-tank which found that a 20-cent tax on a 75-cent soft drink resulted in the Body Mass Index of an obese person decline from 40 to 39.98.

Denmark tried a ?junk food tax? in 2001. The result? Disastrous economic consequences.

Food manufacturers fled, jobs were shipped across the border, and no positive health outcomes were measured. It?s just not worth it. Yes, health is important. Families should try to teach their children about nutrition and good health. Social campaigns and ads encouraging people to exercise and eat vegetables are great. Athletes and Olympians are championed, and continue to be our society?s greatest role models.

If the OMA wants to take out private ads, that?s fine. When they get into meddling with laws and taxes, it?s a different story.
