The purpose of a cover letter is to get someone to read your resume. Each cover letter needs to be unique and sound unique, customized to the position and person addressed by it. The letter needs to be addressed to an individual or don?t bother sending it. If you don?t have a name, you try but can?t get one and decide to apply anyway, all the other rules for the cover letter still apply. At last resort you can address your letter to the Director of Human Resources, by name.

2-Don?t bore them: A sure sign of someone who has no real idea how to write a resume is that they focus the resume and the whole application around themselves. This is a mistake. The recruiter doesn?t really give two hoots why you want the job, they mostly want to know what you can do for their company. Focus on the company and you will be much more successful.

Since you are fresh out of college, it is most likely that you have not had any jobs before unlike experienced workers who start their resume with details on their work history. Thus, it is more applicable for you to start your resume with your academic history, which includes your academic honors and achievements, extra-curricular activities and leadership, academic volunteerism, or any details that highlights your academic achievements. In writing such, you should be able to discern your strong points for each academic detail.

More often than not, employers do not want to take most of their time reading long resumes. As such, it is advisable to keep your resume as short as possible. You only have to put important details such as your skills, honors, and experiences. As much as possible, keep your resume in one page only.

5-Make sure you fit: For some unknown reason there is a certain group of people within society that feel they can get ahead in the job hunting process by just rewriting a resume for every position they see. This is not how to write a resume! Finding a job is not a war of attrition! Make sure you have at least a chance with everything you apply for, and tailor make your resumes to jobs you fit with!
