Atheist and pro-Israel, Maikel Nabil tests free speech in Egypt

A year ago this week, Maikel Nabil became the first Egyptian blogger to be arrested solely for his opinion. Now released, he talks about his fight for one of the key principles of democracy.

Maikel Nabil's views are controversial in Egypt in almost every way ? his open atheism, his support for gay rights, and especially his support for Israel.

But it was his opposition to the military that made him the first Egyptian blogger to be imprisoned for his opinions after the uprising that overthrew former President Hosni Mubarak.

The rail-thin blogger, a pacifist, had become a thorn in the Egyptian Army's side well before Egyptians took to the streets en masse last year by publicly refusing mandatory military service.

He started a campaign against conscription on his blog, where he also posted poetry and nonpolitical musings.

Then, less than two months after the fall of Mr. Mubarak, the military arrested Mr. Nabil. His offense? Writing a post describing abuses by the military, which had stepped in to take power.

In the immediate wake of his arrest, which took place exactly a year ago, few defended Nabil or his right to freedom of expression ? a central tenet of democracy. His case turned out to be a harbinger of a crackdown on free expression by Egypt's military rulers last year.

While Nabil was recently released after going on a hunger strike, some are worried that Egyptians' reluctance to defend the rights of unpopular figures like him will mean a slow but sure erosion of the right of free expression.

"The failure to respond immediately to cases like Maikel Nabil's early in the year in a sense set the stage for the military to keep tightening the public space there was for dissidence," says Heba Morayef, a researcher for Human Rights Watch. Now, she says, "there isn't a strong sense of the need to protect freedom of expression. And that's very dangerous going forward."

Born into a Coptic Christian family in Assiut, a city in southern Egypt, Nabil got a degree in veterinary science from a university there. He says he's not cut out for 9-to-5 office jobs, so he focused instead on writing, activism, and studies. He was studying for a postgraduate law degree at Cairo University, but missed his final exams while in prison.

He is warm and polite, but quick to challenge statements he disagrees with ? such as the popular revolutionary chant, "The Army and the people are one hand."

The March 8, 2011, blog post that got him arrested was titled "The Army and the people were never one hand." In it, he made the case that the military never supported, much less saved, the Egyptian revolution, and he detailed their abuses.

By the time he was arrested on March 28, the military council that had promised to oversee a quick transition to an elected government had racked up a list of abuses, including subjecting thousands of civilians to military tribunals, forcing female protesters to submit to "virginity tests" that amounted to sexual assault, and beating and torturing protesters.

Military intelligence officers arrested him and charged him with insulting the military and publishing false information. The evidence against him was 73 screen shots of his blog and Facebook page.

It was a clear free-expression case. "I haven't done anything wrong. I haven't stolen anything, or killed anyone," says Nabil, recently released and wearing brand-new jeans and a hoodie sweatshirt. "I was arrested for my opinions."

His case drew little attention at first; Egyptians were still enamored of the military, which they saw as the savior of the revolution ? in part because soldiers had not attacked protesters as the police had. Any protest against the military was, at the time, extremely controversial.

The Expansion Of High Speed Online Gaming..Even Rural Areas ...

Video games have been around for years, but the internet has taken them to a whole new level.? Now, gamers are no longer confined to

High Speed Internet Gaming Expansionsitting in front of their television and playing by themselves or with a group of friends in the same room.? Instead, gamers can now play all of the most popular games online through a high speed internet connection and take on foes who may be across the street or across the globe.

In fact, online gaming is one of the fastest growing trends in the entire world.? For example, World of Warcraft has over seven million active members and the total number of MMOG subscriptions is quickly approaching the fourteen million mark worldwide.? A lot of the excitement surrounding online gaming has been fueled by the growth of high speed internet service and access.? In fact, players need a high speed connection in order to have the most enjoyable game play experience. Without a high speed connection, the game is jerky and not nearly as fun and enjoyable.? However, some gamers don?t live in regions where they can get on DSL or cable and have been wondering about gaming on satellite internet service.? Traditionally, gamers have not been able to use satellite service to play a lot of games, however, that notion may start to fade away soon.

The main problem with satellite internet and online game play has not been with the speed, but rather with the issue of latency.? Latency is simply and expression of how much time it takes for data to get one from one point to another.? When you are talking about satellite internet these points can be tens of thousands of miles away from each other because the satellite is thousands of miles into space.? Latency then comes into play with online gaming because of the time it takes from when a player hits a button to when the action is performed in the game.? With cable or DSL service, the latency is virtually nonexistent and is between fifty and one hundred and fifty milliseconds.? However, the latency with satellite internet is between six hundred and eight hundred milliseconds. While this might not seem like a lot, it can make the difference between virtual life and death.? While the latency issue does rule out some first person shooter games, there are still plenty of other MMOG?s that operate very well over a satellite internet connection.

There are some ways of getting around the latency issue.? First, with new technology and quicker servers, the latency will continue to drop as much as physics allows.? In addition, players can also speed up the computer by increasing the total amount of bandwidth available. This may mean eliminating some non essential services in order to have the best possible speed.

Having a satellite internet connection doesn?t have to mean that you will never be able to participate in online gaming. In fact, you can do just about anything that you want to do over a satellite connection that you can on DSL or even cable. ?For the moment just be selective about the types of games you play.

Sheldon Richman on Why the Health Insurance Mandate Is Immoral ...

The Obama administration argued to the U.S. Supreme Court this week that people must be compelled to buy medical insurance (designed by the government) or the national medical-insurance market will fail. Thus, Obamacare advocates say, the insurance mandate is consistent with the powers delegated under the Commerce Clause of the U.S. Constitution.?The argument, however, contains a fatal flaw. If the medical-insurance market would indeed fail without a mandate, writes Sheldon Richman, it?s only because of other mandates the government has already imposed. Thus the government has created the rationale for an extension of its own power.

House ready to OK GOP budget, rejects rival plans

(AP) ? Republicans are ready to ram through the House an election-year, $3.5 trillion budget that showcases their deficit-cutting plan for revamping Medicare and slicing everything from food stamps to transportation while rejecting President Barack Obama's call to raise taxes on the rich.

The blueprint by House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, R-Wis., was headed for all but certain House passage Thursday, mostly along party lines. It faces a demise that is just as sure in the Democratic-run Senate, which plans to ignore it, but the battle remains significant because of the clarity with which it contrasts the two parties' budgetary visions for voters.

Republicans were focused on sharper deficit reduction and starkly less government than Democrats wanted and were proposing to lower income tax rates while erasing many unspecified tax breaks. Obama and Democrats were ready to boost taxes on families making above $250,000 and on oil and gas companies, add spending for roads and schools and cull more modest savings from domestic programs.

"They're choosing the next election over the next generation," Ryan said, deriding Democrats' plans as far too timid. He added, "If we don't tackle these fiscal problems soon, they're going to tackle us as a country."

Democrats said they, too, were eager to stanch deficits that now exceed $1 trillion annually. But they said it needed to be done in a more balanced way, with rich and poor alike sharing the load.

"It's a path to greater prosperity ? if you're already wealthy," said Rep. Chris Van Hollen of Maryland, top Democrat on the Budget panel, mocking the "Path to Prosperity" title Ryan has given his document. "Because our Republican colleagues refuse to ask millionaires to contribute one cent to deficit reduction, they hit everyone and everything else."

In a pair of preliminary votes expected Thursday, conservatives were offering their own proposal with deeper spending cuts and far faster deficit-reduction than the GOP plan, claiming to balance the budget in just five years. Democrats were pushing a measure featuring pumped-up spending for education and new tax credits for companies creating jobs and raising wages, while claiming savings from winding down the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, government waste and reductions in farm payments.

Both were destined to be defeated.

Underscoring the prickly partisan gulf over how to tackle the budget's drastic imbalances, the House late Wednesday on a 382-38 vote easily shot down a compromise, bipartisan deficit-cutting plan by moderates of both parties that mingled tax increases with spending cuts.

The measure was modeled roughly on a package produced by Obama's deficit-reduction commission. The commission's plan drew praise from prominent deficit foes but was treated coolly by Obama and congressional leaders of both parties.

The House also voted 414-0 Wednesday to reject Obama's budget, with Democrats accusing the GOP of forcing the vote to embarrass them. Democrats were concerned Republicans would use campaign ads to link Democrats who supported Obama's plan to all of its details, including tax increases and boosts for unpopular programs.

Congress' budget is a nonbinding road map that suggests tax and spending changes that lawmakers should make in separate, later legislation.

Particularly with voters deciding control of the White House and the Capitol in November, the two parties are sure to stalemate each other's budgetary priorities until after the election.

The House GOP budget would cut spending by $5.3 trillion more over the next decade than Obama's would ? out of more than $40 trillion that would still be spent during that period. It envisions repeal of the president's health care overhaul and sets a course for deep reductions for highway and rail projects, research and aid to college students and farmers while easing planned defense cuts.

It also would cut taxes by $2 trillion more than the president over that time, leaving Republicans seeking about $3.3 trillion in deeper deficit reduction than Obama.

Drawing the most political heat was Ryan's plan for Medicare, the $500 billion-a-year health insurance program for older Americans that all agree is growing so fast that its future financing is shaky. Both parties know that seniors vote in high numbers and care passionately about the program.

Republicans would leave the plan alone for retirees and those near retirement, letting the government continue paying much of their doctors' and hospital bills.

For younger people, Medicare would be reshaped into a voucher-like system in which the government would subsidize people's health care costs, which Republicans say would drive down federal costs by giving seniors a menu of options that would compete with each other. Democrats say government payments won't keep up with the rapid inflation of medical costs, leaving many beneficiaries struggling to afford the care they need.

"It ends the Medicare guarantee," House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said of Ryan's budget.

"This plan doesn't end the Medicare guarantee," said Rep. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz. "Arithmetic does. Unless we change something, unless we put it on a solvent footing, the Medicare guarantee is gone."

Republicans would turn Medicaid, the nearly $300 billion-a-year federal-state health insurance program for the poor, into a grant that states could use as they wish. They also would trim its growth by $800 billion over the next decade.

Big Show could achieve a historic milestone at WrestleMania

Big Show can become a Grand Slam Champion at WrestleMania XXVIII

In a way, Big Show?s Intercontinental Championship Match against Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania XXVIII is the most important match in his entire career. It's not simply because Rhodes has demeaned, assaulted, and otherwise attempted to sully the giant?s reputation leading up to The Show of Shows. But it plays an important role because of the milestone that he himself can achieve. (MATCH PREVIEW | SHOW VS. RHODES ROAD TO WRESTLEMANIA: PHOTOS)

For weeks now, Rhodes has made light of The World?s Largest Athlete?s apparent reputation as a ?choke artist? on The Grandest Stage of Them All, pointing out Big Show?s spotty track record at past WrestleManias. Cody Rhodes does have a point. Despite his incredible career, Big Show?s WrestleMania record does leave something to be desired. But here?s a tidbit that the outspoken Intercontinental Champion might not have realized.

Big Show is one title away from having earned every active title in WWE, placing him among the most decorated Superstars to ever step into the ring. Show has held the WWE Championship, the World Heavyweight Championship (45 seconds or not, he was still the champion), the United States Championship, and the WWE Tag Team Championship (as a bonus, he?s also won the now-defunct ECW Championship, Hardcore Championship, and World Tag Team Championship, no ?small? feat by any stretch of the imagination).

The only remaining title needed to complete the set? That?s right, Cody Rhodes? precious Intercontinental Title, which he?s held in his clutches for more than 200 days. Just one victory and Big Show will achieve a new level of immortality in WWE, lifting himself to a lofty pedestal that few have reached.

History might be on Rhodes?s side, where the giant?s record at The Showcase of the Immortals in concerned. But if Big Show pulls off his first WrestleMania victory in signals competition, he will make history on a very large scale. All he has to do now is win. (MATCH PREVIEW | SHOW VS. RHODES ROAD TO WRESTLEMANIA: PHOTOS)

"Exhausted" Suu Kyi cancels Myanmar campaign tour

Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi has cancelled campaign rallies a week before crucial parliamentary by-elections after being taken ill while on tour, her party said on Sunday.

After suffering lopsided losses to Mitt Romney in the Illinois and Puerto Rico primaries, Rick Santorum nets a win in Louisiana.

Suu Kyi, 66, had been vomiting as a result of air and sea sickness while in southern Myeik and was "completely exhausted", her security officer told Reuters.

"She needs to have a good rest and save her energy," Khun Tha Myint said.

Her National League for Democracy party, which ended its boycott of Myanmar's army-dominated political system to run in the April 1 polls, said a March 27-28 trip to four constituencies was now cancelled on the advice of Suu Kyi's doctor.

She was to have visited Magway division, a stronghold of the NLD and also the home of her late father, Aung San, Myanmar's independence hero.

Suu Kyi, who spent a total of 15 years in detention from 1989-2010 because of her opposition to military rule, has been touring the country for the past two months to court support for the NLD's campaign in the elections for 45 parliament seats.

Suu Kyi will contest a seat on the outskirts of Yangon and her decision to run for parliament is a big boost for the government seeking domestic and international acceptance for a year-old parliament that is dominated by retired or serving military.

Polls were initially due to take place in 48 constituencies, but the Election Commission cancelled ballots in three of them on Friday due to security reasons.

All were in Kachin State bordering China, where clashes between the military and ethnic Kachin militias continue unabated, despite months of efforts to reach a ceasefire deal.

The elections are seen as a critical gauge of the civilian government's reform pledges and, if regarded as free and fair by Western countries, diplomats say it is likely more sanctions will be withdrawn as early as the end of April.

Embargoes by the United States, Canada and the European Union, among others, have limited investment in resource-rich Myanmar mostly to Asian firms, which are looking to expand in the country while Western companies remain on the sidelines.

The government blames sanctions for keeping much of Myanmar's 60 million population in poverty, although economists say rampant corruption and the inept fiscal policies of previous military juntas were also major factors.

'Zia' by Scott O'Dell a fictional look at life in California missions

Just forty miles north of San Francisco, in the center of Sonoma sits the San Francisco Solano Mission, sometimes known as the Sonoma Mission. It is the northernmost mission, established by the Catholic Church in 1823. Approximately 600 miles to the south is Mission San Diego, or San Diego de Alcala, the southernmost mission and the first mission to be established in California. A total of 21 missions exist, including Sonoma Mission and Mission San Diego.

As anyone who has gone to elementary school in California knows, the study of the California Missions is part of the fourth-grade study of California history. Students spend weeks learning about the different Franciscan priests who established each of the missions, building models of the missions and learning what life was like in the missions.

Zia, by Scott O'Dell is a book that gives a fictionalized account of life in the missions by a fourteen-year-old girl whose ancestors lived on one of the Channel Islands located off the coast of California near Santa Barbara and Ventura. The residents of that island were part of the Nicolenos, a small band of American Indians which no longer exists.?Zia is a sequel to O'Dell's Newbery Medal-winning book Island of the Blue Dolphins.

Book Info

Title: Zia

Author: Scott O'Dell

Publisher: Sandpiper (2011)

ISBN: ?978-0547406336

Check out a slideshow of other books by Scott O'Dell

Zia and her younger brother Mando are living at the mission in Santa Barbara. Eighteen years earlier their mother had brought them there as small children when her family was rescued from San Nicholas, the smallest and most remote of the Channel Islands of California. Zia's aunt Karana was left alone on the island and it is her story that is told in Islands of the Blue Dolphin. In Zia, the story revolves around the young girl's efforts to rescue her aunt and be reunited with the only family member left, besides her brother.

Although Karana is safely reunited with Zia and Mando, it isn't the joyous reunion Zia expected. Zia no longer remembers the language of her mother and Karana knows no language but her native tongue. Life in the mission is hard, even cruel at times, and is realistically shown. Zia wavers from wanting to stay where she is fed and clothed, and running away with several others because of the policies and cruelities inflicted by the Catholic Church upon the 'heathen savages' whose souls they must save.

Island of the Blue Dolphins is a better book than its sequel. But Zia is a book worth reading, especially for nine and ten-year-olds that are studying the California Missions. It is also worth reading if one enjoys historical fiction. It does give an accurate portrayal of what life in the missions was like for neophytes. There were those who treated the natives with kindness and respect, but there were also long days filled with hard work and prayer.

This book, in addition to visiting the missions of northern California if possible, would only add to any education about California history. Other missions in northern California include:

Matron: Pastoral letter from an average lesbian to the leaders of the ...

Matron initially wrote the text below as a comment on one of the many blogposts by faithful Catholics that are currently promoting the "pastoral letter" written by Archbishop Vincent Nichols and Archbishop Peter Smith on ?gay marriage'.

As Matron has already said many a time in various fora, she is no great fan of gay marriage herself because she is no great fan of marriage. As an indoctrinated 80s feminist who grew up on a steady diet of philosophical and legal critique of the institution, she has never quite managed to overcome her resistance to a concept whose sole purpose it seems to be to privilege one way of arranging one's life over another. To her, marriage itself already always seemed to be the epitome of something that creates inequality in a society and she still wonders if gay people who want to be part of it might not maybe be selling those of us who don't down the river to some extent.

For this reason gay marriage is something that Matron has consistently refused to campaign on all her gay, adult life, preferring instead to argue for a society and a legal system where people's life choices in all their rainbow coloured variety are recognised and protected by law. She stands by that even in the face of pressure from her own community because, quite frankly, it seems a bit silly to be for something just because the Catholic church is against it.

However, it cannot be denied that:

(a) there is of course a ludicrous element of inequality in the denial of marriage to one part of society solely on the basis of the gender of the person they love,

(b) the conflation of romantic notions of love, societal objectives, religious dogma, and the law has created a myriad of messy beliefs and understandings of what marriage is and should be about, and

(c) - as the Catholic church has done - the throwing into this unholy mess of argument the imperative of marriage being solely there to enable procreation and the raising of children adds a level of irrationality and - lets face it - entertainment value to the debate that deserves its entirely separate blog post, seeing as it also seems to deny the right to marry to those straight couples who cannot have children or who definitely and freely decide not to have them.

Much has been said and argued on that latter part in particular and many examples have been cited for loving gay relationships where children are nourished, loved and cared for, versus incapable single mothers, despicable rogues of fathers, broken homes and, not least, the Catholic church's abysmal reaction to the fact of child abuse by members of its own ranks. Indeed, Matron, like almost everyone of her ilk, now has gay and lesbian friends who raise children, including a lesbian couple who is providing that loving home for a group of three siblings given up for adoption by social services after suffering physical and psychological abuse at the hands of their heterosexual parents.

But equally, Matron knows of gay and lesbian relationship breakdowns, with or without children, where the partners had to deal with exactly the same social, emotional and legal issues as their straight counterparts. The bottom line is that we are no better and no worse at this relationship and raising children thing than straights have been for millennia. Nor should we be expected to be and Matron does not believe that a "holier than though" attitude is going to help anyone even one iota.

But what she does believe is that the discourse that is currently being had openly on the letters pages of our national newspapers, blogs and social networks is deeply offensive and hurtful, showing as it does to those of us who might just have thought that this society is changing for the better and might be becoming more tolerant, what a morass of hate and prejudice still lurks beneath the surface. To this extent it is not only damaging to individuals' mental health and self esteem but it is damaging to the very fabric of our society.

And for a church that professes to have as its major tenet the commandment to "love thy neighbour" there is remarkably little of that love shown to any neighbour who doesn't play by its own restrictive, narrow-minded and, yes, openly discriminatory rules. So even if Matron could bring herself to have faith in some spiritual superior being for whose existence there is not a shred of scientific evidence, she would never be able to believe in a god this spiteful and a church this hellbent (pardon the pun) on the exclusion and damnation of significant parts of his creation. That sort of god is not a loving god, no matter what his minions preach from their pulpits of a Sunday morning.

"Sticks and stones", one could of course argue and, on the plus side, Matron has also received many messages of support from straight friends, family and acquaintences that make it clear that things are not all bad. But the sticks and stones argument never really works very well for those of us with thinner skins and for Matron this week there was the added complication that she was actually required to attend a full Catholic mass at a time when the only reason why she would ever want to go near a Catholic church would be to picket it.

So here is the comment that she posted on that other blog in which she describes just how that made her feel. It's a bit more private and personal that her usual ramblings and she will no doubt regret posting it later, but for the time being she thinks that there isn't enough out there yet about this aspect of the whole debate:

"Yesterday, I was glad enough to be there for my lesbian partner when we attended the catholic funeral mass for her grandmother, a woman who, aged 85 at the time, welcomed me into her heart and her family 17 years ago when my girlfriend and I first started going out. Walking behind the coffin into the church together with the rest of the family we had to go past a table with a neat pile of your ?pastoral letters? and, next to it, a petition on the matter, signed no doubt by many of the parishioners who were sitting in the pews waiting for us to pass.

It made it clear to me once more that although everyone in my partner?s family treats me as a fully signed up member of their clan, the same way in fact, as they treat the spouses of my partner?s siblings, the church they belong to continues to see me as a second class citizen regardless of how much time, love and committment I share with their daughter, how much I get involved in their gatherings, the care for their children and their elderly. Whatever I do and however much love I show towards my partner and those she holds dear, in the eyes of their church I will never be good enough.

I am not sure, if any of those who are promoting this letter have the capacity to understand how much hurt and offence you are causing to those of us who, although we may not be religious, try to live a life in which we do the right things, love those dear to us without constraints and in return only want to get shown the same love and respect for these efforts as everybody else.

Whatever you think about marriage and the rationale for it, the public discourse church leaders are currently creating, the comparisons they are making between what, in my and most other cases, are supportive, loving and committed relationships between two (not three, four or five) people and things like bestiality and legalising slavery etc. are homophobic and show none of the love towards your fellow creature that your own church?s founder commands.

Given everything I read in the papers in recent weeks, it took all I?ve got for me to decide to even go near a Catholic church yesterday. I did it because the woman I love needed my support and because I know the woman we were burying would have wanted me to be there. Which part of that love that we share is so lacking in the necessary quality that it doesn?t make the grade in your book? If an 85 year old Irish catholic woman could accept my relationship with her granddaughter, why can?t her church?"

[Update: on the other blog, a nice Christian gentleman has now replied to my comment to tell me that my relationship "ontologically damages me". But fear not, Jesus loves all the gays and only has their happiness at heart. And according to an article to which I was kindly directed, it is my lifestyle itself, and not the discriminatory treatment by society, that makes me miserable because

"[t]he ultimate misery of homosexuality is, in fact, what every longitudinal study reveals. An active homosexual life most often results in shortened life span, prevalence of disease, drug and alcohol abuse, and relationships that are brief and emotionally hurtful, with little hope of fidelity, and a high occurrence of violent abuse. The chances of a person committing suicide are also greatly increased."

There's clearly no way of responding to this "Through the looking glass" logic" without making oneself even more miserable, so we shall leave it here.]

Sonos' new controller apps now available for kicking out those jams

Image
Remember those revamped Sonos apps the company teased last week? Now they can be yours whenever you choose to update the software on your OS X or Windows computer. As well as a refreshed user interface, you'll get unified search, drag-and-drop functionality and one-touch party mode -- although it turns out, that last one doesn't suddenly make a party appear in your house. Shame, that.

Obesity believed to increase the risk of colorectal cancer | Green ...

From Green Right Now Reports

Obesity contributes to diabetes, hypertension and heart disease.

This we know from numerous studies and clinical observations.

Soon, however, another major illness may be confirmed on the list of those triggered or worsened by obesity: Colon cancer, the second leading cancer killer in the United States (after lung cancer).

Gastroenterologists fear that dietary risk factors may account for as many as 90 percent of colorectal cancers and they?ve teamed up with the Campaign to End Obesity (CEO) to spread the news that people with a higher Body Mass Index (BMI) should take extra care to get colorectal monitoring.

Recent studies ?suggest that about one-quarter of colorectal cancer cases could be avoided by following a healthy lifestyle,? said Lawrence R. Schiller, president of the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG), in a news statement on the new education program.

While working to improve their diet ? by eating less fatty food and more whole grains and fruits and vegetables ? Americans who are overweight should take the next step of speaking with their doctor about colon cancer screenings.

?Consumers need to understand the link between a higher Body Mass Index and colorectal cancer, take this risk factor seriously, and talk to their doctor about colorectal cancer tests,? he said in a statement last week.

?Obesity is the precursor to an array of serious diseases, among them colorectal cancer,? said Stephanie Silverman, co-founder of the Campaign to End Obesity. ?With two thirds of adults struggling with being overweight or obese, it is essential people understand their long-term health. Fortunately, we have available many useful and practical tools to help people. Screening is one of the most powerful weapons at-hand for preventing colorectal cancer and obesity.?

The education effort aims to help patients understand that medical studies are finding a link between colorectal cancer mortality and metabolic syndrome, a collection of diseases that tend to appear together and increase the risk of having other related illnesses.

Researchers are currently looking at the emerging link between obesity-induced insulin resistance and ?hyperinsulinemia? and the development of colorectal cancer.

This all suggests that losing weight, to reduce one?s insulin dependence, could therefore also greatly reduce a person?s risk of colorectal cancer and polyps.

These are the ACG?s screening guidelines:

The ACG recommends that men and women at average risk for colorectal cancer begin screening at age 50. African-Americans should begin colorectal cancer screening at 45. The 2009 ACG evidence-based colorectal cancer screening guidelines distinguish between cancer prevention tests and cancer detection tests. Cancer prevention tests are preferred over detection tests. Colonoscopy every 10 years is the preferred colorectal cancer prevention test.
