Path releases an iPad app -- finally - News - Know Your Cell
Path has finally launched its long-awaited social network app for the?iPad?just in time for the release of Apple's new mini tablet. And yes, it will be compatible with the new 7.9-inch screen, as well as all generations of Apple's full-sized iPads.?
Path's iPad app is quite similar to its iPhone counterpart in that you get all of the same goodies -- but in an expansive view. Scrolling through your friends list and news feed is a lot easier and it all looks pretty slick in landscape mode. Viewing Path in landscape also allows you to see a lot more; you can view everything from the entire day in one shot (swiping back will allow you to view content from previous days).?
Perhaps one of the app's best features is the ability to quickly and easily acquire additional content directly. Let's say a friend is listening to a song that you've never heard. Once you click on that image, you'll be able to gain extra info -- and give it a listen if you want -- right on your?iPad. You can do this with pretty much anything that you find interesting in your feed.?
A little background info
The scaled-down social network, for those unfamiliar, limits your friend count to a modest 150 in order to create a more intimate environment.?That's still quite an overwhelming number for some folks (seriously, who the hell hangs out with 150 friends on average in real life?), but it's a mere fraction of what you typically see on networks like Facebook (by the way, you can login or sign up directly to Path's app using your Facebook account).?
In brief, Path makes it possible to let your guard down a little more (read: less self-editing), since you're only sharing with a select number of friends and family. Not that it's ever stopped the average Facebook user from posting entirely too much information in one single status update.?

Civility efforts seek better behavior on campus
COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) ? Jewish students in the University of California system labeled terrorists for their support of Israel. Black high school students pelted by bananas on a Tennessee campus tour. A hostile student in Maryland challenging his professor to a fight after the teacher limited the use of cell phones and laptops during lectures.
In a society where anonymous Internet commenters freely lob insults, and politicians spew partisan barbs, the decline of basic civility isn't limited to academia. But the push for more polite discourse ? often as an extension of more entrenched diversity efforts ? is firmly taking root on campus.
From the University of Missouri to Penn State and Vanderbilt, colleges across the country are treating the erosion of common decency as a public health epidemic on par with measles outbreaks and sexually transmitted diseases.
"What we're trying to do is remind me people of what they already know, to get back in touch with things they probably learned growing up," said Noel English, who heads a new Missouri civility campaign called "Show Me Respect," a nod to the state's nickname.
The Missouri campaign comes after two white students pleaded guilty in April 2010 to misdemeanor littering charges for dumping cotton balls outside the school's black culture center during Black History Month; the students were sentenced to 80 hours of community service, two years of probation and had their driver licenses suspended for two months. A 2009 survey of more than 3,500 students found that nearly one in seven reported incidents of harassment on campus, from racial slurs to hostile emails.
At a campus civility workshop earlier this week, Eric Waters, a junior from Mansfield, Texas, who is the football team's starting tight end, described how other students often label Mizzou football players as "mean" and "disrespectful" womanizers, sometimes to his face.
"It's not about the stereotypes people put on us," he said. "We try to carry ourselves like true gentlemen."
The University of Tennessee enacted its civility campaign in 2011. There had been a cotton ball incident at the Knoxville school's black cultural center after President Barack Obama's election and, in 2010, bananas were thrown at a group of more than 100 black high school students from Memphis during a campus visit.
"We want to be a campus that's welcoming to all, and hostile to none," said Chancellor Jimmy Cheek, who now outlines the school's 10 "principles of civility and community" at freshman orientation. The shared values range from inclusivity and collegiality to respect and integrity.
In some cases, the campus civility campaigns are being challenged by First Amendment advocates who fear that such programs muzzle unpopular speech in the name of tolerance and diversity.
That was the complaint at North Carolina State University, which revised a residence hall policy that, among other stipulations, prohibited dorm dwellers from wearing T-shirts or hanging posters "disrespectful and hurtful to others" while also requiring students to "confront behavior or report to staff incidents of incivility and intolerance."
The new policy now includes a written caveat calling the civility effort a set of "voluntary expectations" while emphasizing that the school is "strongly committed to freedom of expression."
"Civility is an important value," said Robert Shibley, senior vice president of the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education, which protested the Raleigh university's civility policy. "But at the same time, it can't be made the paramount issue in a free society, because there has to be space for people who have intense feelings about things to express those feelings in a way that really communicates the urgency and the depths of feeling that lies behind their opinions."
When campuses attempt to compel civil behavior, Shibley said, they become "so committed to civility that if you say something uncivil, you are going to be penalized In some way, that's going too far. It starts to infringe on the very expressions that are protected by the First Amendment."
Many credit Pier Forni, a professor of Italian literature at Johns Hopkins University, as the dean of the campus civility movement. He started the Hopkins Civility Project 15 years ago, wrote the 2002 book "Choosing Civility" and is a frequent guest speaker on other campuses, including at Missouri earlier this year.
For Forni, the culprits behind contemporary incivility are numerous, from what he called "the crisis of civil engagement" in this country to eroding workplace manners to "radical informality" heightened by Facebook and related social media. Yet he has no interest in making civil behavior a campus requirement.
"Civility should be promoted, not believed in," he said. "Civility is not something to enforce. "
Among the schools embracing those beliefs is the University of Arizona, which last year opened the National Institute for Civil Discourse after the shootings in Tucson, Ariz., that killed six people and injured 13, including Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.
In 2010, Rutgers University launched its "Project Civility" just before freshman Tyler Clementi killed himself when a roommate secretly recorded the teen's sexual encounter with another man. English, the Missouri campaign leader, said the New Jersey student's suicide helped influence her decision to start a program on campus.
She, too, favors the voluntary approach, though her initial instincts said otherwise.
"My first thought was, 'I'm a lawyer, we need a rule or a policy,' but then my thinking was, 'That's not really necessary,'" she said. "We can have all the policies in the world, but what we want to do is raise awareness and get people thinking ... We want to change the culture so it just becomes embedded."
Or, as Noor Azizan-Gardner, Missouri's chief diversity officer, put it: "I'm hoping when they graduate they will know what it means to be civil, kind and compassionate."

Hollande stands tough against anti-Semitism
TOULOUSE, France (AP) ? The French president on Thursday promised Jewish children targeted in a deadly attack by an Islamist militant that their country will protect them and fight to stamp out the anti-Semitism that left four dead in their schoolyard.
The school's director, his voice cracking, recalled the "dark Monday" when he lost his young daughter and his faith in the safety of the community he built.
Rabbi Yaacov Monsonego, who said he and his wife had worked to transform the school in Toulouse into a center of learning for young Jews, slumped as he recalled the day his 8-year-old daughter, a teacher and two of the teacher's young sons died. Dozens of children who had stood at formal attention for the visit from the French president and Israeli prime minister crumpled into tears at the memory.
That day, Monsonego said, "a monstrous hatred destroyed my universe. "
On March 19, French-born Mohammed Merah stormed the school, shooting 8-year-old Myriam Monsonego in the head and spreading blood on the schoolyard before getting on his motorbike and driving away. Among the dead were a rabbi and his two young sons and, in an earlier shooting, three French paratroopers, two of North African descent and one from the Antilles.
Francois Hollande, in the final throes of campaigning for the French presidency, visited the school that day. He came Thursday with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, promising to continue the fight against anti-Semitism.
On Wednesday, the French government expelled a Muslim preacher for his anti-Semitic speeches, calls for holy war and defense of violence against women; and earlier in October security forces said they dismantled a network of French-born radical Islamists bent on targeting Jews, accusing the group in a firebomb attack on a kosher grocery outside Paris.
"French Jews must know that the republic will use all means available to protect them," Hollande said. "Their security is a national cause."
He promised to go after anti-Semitism on social networks "where hatred gains anonymity" and elsewhere. He acknowledged flaws in security officials' handling of Merah, who had been under surveillance in the past and traveled to Pakistan and Afghanistan for apparent weapons training. Merah avoided detection as he plotted the attacks in Toulouse, which also included the shooting deaths of three French-born paratroopers ? two of North African descent and one from the Antilles.
"Anti-Semitism turns into a fire that quickly engulfs all in its path. It was no coincidence that the murderer of Toulouse killed not only Jews but also French soldiers, Christian and Muslim, with no distinction," Netanyahu said, praising the French government for its response. "This murderer would have killed each Jewish child who crossed his path, exactly like the Nazis. But there are immense differences between the murder of Jews in the past century and those of today."
Today, the Israeli leader said, European governments ? and especially France's ? are fighting back.
Hollande, who met privately with students ahead of the speeches in the packed gymnasium, said one child asked him how long police would be posted at the school, which is surrounded by a high wall and metal gate and under constant surveillance.
"As long as it takes," he said, recounting the conversation.
The school was renamed Ohr Torah to break from the painful memories of the March attack, but they were apparent in the weeping of the students and the quiet voice of Eva Sandler, who lost her husband and their two sons Gabriel and Arieh. Now a widow and mother of one little girl, Sandler addressed Hollande in French and Netanyahu in Hebrew, saying she struggled sometimes to find meaning for humanity. Her father-in-law recalled his last conversation with his son.
"The grief is always there, vivid and deep," Eva Sandler said.
Netanyahu, who spoke last, got a rock star's welcome from the children, who cheered and stamped when he first addressed them in French and followed his lead as he chanted "Israel will live" with the crowd.
At the end of the day, after both leaders left and their security detail had packed up, the green metal gate clanged shut. A lone officer could still be seen on the roof across the way, securing everything in his sight.

Why Some People Can Never Let Go: Why Commitment Is Not ...
When you say "I love you" to someone, it is supposed to be forever, at least, that is the plan for most couples. But, sometimes, even in the best of relationships, commitment is always forever and occasionally there comes the need to say goodbye. What happens when one person decides to walk away but the other person decides that they are going to hold on to the embers of a dying or dead love? It can be harder for the person who will not let go, especially if they do not want to face up to the facts.
Take a young couple from New York as an example. They got together while working at the same company and things were going well until some major changes came along. First, she was offered an executive position which would require a move from their home state to one of two different locations. In the midst of making this major life decision, the couple also found they were expecting a child. They agreed that on where they would move. They also agreed that eventually she would either return to work full time or would agree to have a second child. And, so, they moved and the child was born.
Fast forward nearly a decade: the man has had several different jobs at varying levels in the retail field, unable to stay put in any one position for very long. She has put off the concept of having that second child for as long as possible but now he is really starting to push her to get back to their original plans. They are fighting nearly all of the time now, acrimonious fights that spring up out of nowhere and spiral quickly out of control. Finally, she has had enough and she asks him to leave.
He is convinced that this is only a temporary thing, that she will need him to come back quickly. After all, he is sure that she cannot accomplish anything on her own, discounting the fact that she had been in a supervisory position over him when they met and had continued her education even after things had started going bad between them. What he does not realize is that things really are over between them, no matter how much he wishes and wills them to be better. He will be unable to move on with his own life, unable to accomplish any of the things that she has managed until he digests the fact that they are no longer a couple and never will be again.

Fed up with waiting, air travelers rush rental car counters

As hundreds of thousands of fliers still stranded by Superstorm Sandy struggle to get home or resume their disrupted itineraries, many are getting frustrated with air travel and turning to four-wheel transportation options.
Car rental companies are reporting unusual activity in the wake of the storm, with travelers desperate to get moving.
?It?s people saying, ?I?m stuck, I?ve got to get out of here?,? said Richard Broome, a spokesman for Hertz.
The company estimates it will have rented 10,000 cars one-way from the storm-affected area, compared to a few hundred -- at most -- reservations of this type at this time of the year, Broome said. It means lots of people are picking up a car at one location and dropping it off at another far away, a shift from the typical car rental.
?For this kind of activity, you only see it during truly catastrophic events. Major natural disasters and, for example, 9/11,? Broome said.
Hertz has a very large number of reservations in New York, but it doesn?t physically have enough cars in the city to handle them, he added. The company is moving the cars in as quickly as it can. Orbitz is reporting a 14 percent spike in car rental rates in the Big Apple compared to last week, an indication of increased demand.
For travelers who either couldn?t get a rental car or who are waiting for a flight, there was some good news on Wednesday: JFK and Newark airports provided limited air service. Travelers should check with their airlines before heading to the airport and should take precautionary measures as terminals may have limited food and concessions.
LaGuardia remained closed Wednesday and was described by New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo as having suffered ?extensive damage.? It will open on Thursday and offer limited service, according to an e-mail alert from the airport.
Robert Reid is among the many stranded travelers waiting to return home after the storm. On Wednesday, he was in Bogota, Colombia, preparing to fly back to JFK International after Sandy unexpectedly extended his trip to Ecuador by several days. His original flight would have put him in New York on Monday just as the hurricane was arriving, so he was relieved when it was canceled. Reid used the delay to relax in Quito.
"These are crazy times," said Reid, who is the U.S. travel editor for Lonely Planet. "(But) I can't complain. I was lucky. I'd rather spend a few bonus days in the Andes with hot chocolate cafes than be stuck back in New York."
Carriers have canceled more than 19,500 flights since Sunday, according to FlightAware.com. Almost 3,000 flights were scrubbed today, with LaGuardia accounting for most of them.
Flooded subway tunnels and train tracks in New York are having an impact on carriers who may have planes ready to go but whose pilots, flight attendants, gate agents and other employees are having a hard time getting to the airport.
Limited subway service will be restored to 14 of 23 lines on Thursday, Gov. Cuomo announced.
For airlines, it will probably take at least until this weekend for the domestic backlog to sort out, said George Hobica, founder of Airfarewatchdog.com. It could take a bit longer for people stranded in Asia and Europe who are trying to come back to the U.S., depending on the number of flights and seats available.
?But we will see many people deciding not to begin outward journeys or postponing non-essential outbound trips until after the mess clears up, so that will help,? Hobica said.
The big job now for airlines is to assess the damage and regroup:
- Delta resumed about 50 percent of its schedule at JFK on Wednesday. It expects to resume operations at LaGuardia on Thursday.;
- United resumed inbound flights to JFK and Newark on Wednesday afternoon;
- American Airlines plans to operate limited flights into JFK on Wednesday evening and will resume flying out of JFK, LaGuardia and Newark on Thursday morning;
- JetBlue saw its first arrival at JFK International on Wednesday morning and is looking at a phased return to service. There still will be no JetBlue departures from JFK until Thursday when the airline plans on operating at about 50 percent of its schedule. The airline plans to resume flights at Newark on Thursday.
Airlines will use bigger planes and add more flights to speed things up if they can, said Brett Snyder, who runs the Cranky Concierge air travel assistance service.
?It could have been a lot worse, but this is a lower demand travel time so there is more slack in the system to recover than you'd find around the holidays,? he said.
